Decision of Maximum Congestion Window Size for TCP Performance Improvement by Bandwidth and RTT Measurement in Wireless Multi-Hop Networks

چکیده
In the wireless network, TCP performs poorly because it was originally designed for wired networks and does not take into consideration wireless characteristics such as mobility, high-loss probability, and hidden-terminal problems. In particular, in the wireless multi-hop networks, a large congestion window increases the probability of contention and packet losses, and TCP performance is degraded severely as a result. So, it is necessary to limit the TCP congestion window size in order keep the probability of contention loss in the system to a minimum. In this paper, we propose a new scheme for determining the maximum congestion window size based on the measured bandwidth and RoundTrip-Time (RTT). Using ns-2 simulation, we show that the proposed scheme reduces the probability of packet contention and improves TCP performance.

Performance evaluation of TCP algorithms in multi-hop wireless packet networks
Wireless packet ad hoc networks are characterized by multi-hop wireless connectivity and limited bandwidth competed among neighboring nodes. In this paper, we investigate and evaluate the performance of several prevalent TCP algorithms in this kind of network over the wireless LAN standard IEEE 802.11 MAC layer. After extensively comparing the existing TCP versions (including Tahoe, Reno, New R...

In this paper, we propose a scheme that dynamically adjusts the slow start threshold (ssthresh) of TCP. The ssthresh estimation is used to set an appropriate ssthresh. A good ssthresh would improve the transmission performance of TCP. For the congestion avoidance state, we present a mechanism that probes the available bandwidth. We adjust the congestion window size (cwnd) appropriately by obser...
متن کاملDecoupling congestion control from TCP (semi-TCP) for multi-hop wireless networks
Although many problems for transmission control protocol (TCP) in multi-hop wireless networks have been studied with many proposals in the literature, they are not solved completely yet. Different from the existing proposals to mitigate the limitation of TCP in multi-hop wireless networks, we propose a framework of semi-TCP which decouples two functionalities of traditional TCP, i.e., congestio...
متن کاملImproving TCP Performance in Wireless Multi-hop Networks Design of Efficient Forwarding and Packet Processing Techniques
Due to the high availability of cheap hardware, wireless multi-hop networks and in particular Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are becoming popular in more and more contexts. For instance, IEEE 802.11 based WMNs have already started to be deployed as means to provide Internet access to rural areas in the developing world. To lower the cost and increase the coverage in such deployments, the wired n...
